Jeanie Buss Speaks on Major Overhaul to Restructure Lakers into a Top Winning Franchise

Los Angeles, CA – May 23, 2025

In a bold and candid address to media and fans, Jeanie Buss, the controlling owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, confirmed the organization is undergoing a sweeping overhaul aimed at transforming the iconic franchise back into a perennial championship contender.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Lakers’ El Segundo training facility, Buss acknowledged that the recent seasons had not met the gold standard associated with the Lakers brand.

“This organization has 17 championships for a reason—we don’t just play to participate; we play to win. That’s the legacy my father built, and it’s my responsibility to uphold it,” Buss stated. “We’re not interested in mediocrity. We are restructuring everything—top to bottom—to return to being the most feared and respected team in the league.”

The restructuring begins with leadership. While Rob Pelinka remains the Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Buss emphasized that performance expectations are higher than ever.

“Rob knows the job isn’t just about acquiring stars. It’s about building a team with depth, identity, and discipline. We’re making front office and coaching staff adjustments that reflect our long-term vision,” she added.

Several long-serving personnel across scouting, analytics, and player development are expected to be reassigned or replaced in the coming months. The Lakers are also expanding their analytics department and investing in more advanced sports science and player wellness initiatives under Dr. Leroy Sims, the newly appointed Director of Player Performance and Health.

Buss revealed the Lakers are shifting away from a superstar-centric model to one that prioritizes chemistry, youth development, and sustainable competitiveness.

“We’ve seen that just assembling names doesn’t win championships. We need players who understand what it means to be a Laker, who will fight for each other and for the city,” Buss said. “We are building a roster that reflects heart, hustle, and high basketball IQ.”

Insiders suggest the front office is now prioritizing draft picks, player development infrastructure, and younger veterans known for leadership qualities. There’s also a renewed focus on team culture and accountability.

Though many fans have grown impatient, Buss asked for trust and patience from the Lakers faithful.

“Our fans deserve excellence, and I know this has been a frustrating period. But we’re not making emotional decisions—we’re making the right ones, even if it takes time. I guarantee you this: we are building something real, something that will last.”

Buss concluded with a clear message: the Los Angeles Lakers are no longer reacting to the moment—they are building for the future.

As one of the most storied franchises in sports history, the Lakers’ transformation under Jeanie Buss’s leadership could mark the beginning of a new dynasty—or, at the very least, a return to form that fans around the world have long been waiting for.
