Michigan Bolsters QB Room with Transfer of Former 4-Star Jake Garcia
After a season marred by inconsistent quarterback play, Michigan is wasting no time addressing the position ahead of the 2025 campaign.
The Wolverines officially announced on Monday that graduate transfer quarterback Jake Garcia is joining the program. The former four-star recruit arrives with two years of eligibility remaining and adds much-needed depth and experience to the Michigan QB room.
Garcia, part of the 2021 recruiting class, originally committed to USC before flipping to Miami. During his two seasons with the Hurricanes, he completed 81 of 131 passes for 949 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He later transferred to Missouri, where he saw no game action, before landing at East Carolina. As the Pirates’ starter in 2024, Garcia struggled, throwing for 8 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.
Despite his uneven college career so far, Garcia’s pedigree and experience could prove valuable in Ann Arbor — especially with freshman phenom Bryce Underwood entering the fold. Michigan made headlines earlier this year when it flipped the No. 1 quarterback recruit from LSU, and Underwood is widely expected to compete for the starting job immediately.

Garcia’s addition provides insurance and veteran presence behind the highly touted Underwood, giving the Wolverines flexibility as they aim to bounce back from an 8-5 season. While Michigan did defeat Ohio State for a fourth straight year, the bar will be much higher in 2025 — especially as they begin the season without their head coach on the sideline.
